Open Online Experience

Technology integration experience for educators

Open Online Experience

About the OOE13 program, its connectivist approach, and the community of K-16 educators who shaped its year of learning.

About Us

Open Online Experience 2013 (#OOE13) was a year-long K-16 professional development program focused on educational technology. More importantly, it was a community of educators who shared resources, experiences, and learning together.

The program was designed on a connectivist model, placing knowledge across a network of connections rather than in one central place. It was open to any teacher or faculty member with internet access.

  • Program period: June 2013 to June 2014
  • Participants included co-creators, mentors, and a broader participant map
  • Social tools used included Twitter with #ooe13, Diigo, Google+, and blogs

The Open Online Experience was built around a simple idea: professional learning about educational technology works best when it happens in the open, among peers, across a whole year rather than in a single session. Instead of delivering content from one central place, the program distributed knowledge across a network of participating educators, each contributing resources, reflections, and practical classroom examples. The result was a community-shaped experience in which participants shaped the learning as much as the organizers did, curating and remixing shared material into something personally useful for their own teaching contexts.

A bit of history behind the development of the program

The OOE13 experience developed through the contributions and connections of participating educators. Learning sessions began in September 2013, followed by monthly topics that addressed digital literacy, connectivism, digital citizenship, content curation, and student-directed learning with digital storytelling.

The program concluded in June 2014. Its community practice and connections continued to inform related initiatives such as DNLE and ETMOOC.
