Program Structure
What was the Open Online Experience?
OOE13 was a year-long professional development program for K-16 educators focused on educational technology integration. It ran from June 2013 to June 2014 and was open to any teacher or faculty member with internet access. Participants worked as co-creators and mentors, and a map of participants tracked the network across the year.
How was the program designed?
The program was designed on a connectivist model, where knowledge is distributed across a network of connections rather than delivered in one place. Learning happened through shared resources, conversation, and the collective experience of the group.
How did the monthly topics unfold?
Sessions began in September 2013 and each month centered on a learning topic. Topic 2 (October 2013) covered Connectivism and being connected; Topic 3 (November 2013) covered Digital Citizenship; Topic 5 (February 2014) covered Content Curation; and Topic 6 (March 2014) covered Student Directed Learning: Digital Storytelling — Multimedia, Remixes & Mashups. Digital Literacy was covered in January 2014. Final posts appeared in May and June 2014, when the program concluded.
What was expected of participants?
Participants contributed to the network by sharing resources, reflections, and connections. The program used social media tools including Twitter with the #ooe13 hashtag, Diigo groups, Google+ communities, and blogs — so regular participation in those spaces was how the community stayed connected.
What were the technical requirements?
The only stated requirement for joining was internet access. Beyond that, participants used their own accounts on tools such as Twitter, Diigo, and Google+, along with their own blogs, so a personal blog and a set of social profiles were part of the standard setup.
Are there related programs I should look at?
Yes. The program referenced related online professional development efforts, including DNLE (Stanford) and ETMOOC.
